Courthouse History

Brief outline of Courthouse beginnings: 

  • January 1908 - NOTICE TO ARCHITECTS: Oneida County, by resolution of the county Board, has decided to build a Court House of brick or stone to cost not more than $100,000. It is to have two stories and a basement, and is to contain on first floor six office rooms, and four fire proof vaults, not less than 20' x 20' inside measure; and one second floor, one Circuit Court room, one County Board room with fire-proof vault in connection, one office with fire-proof vault in connection, one Judge's room, two Jury rooms, one Library and one Attorney's room. Basement to contain heating plant (steam) fuel, storage and assembly room for public meetings. (The New North)
  • The building committee invites architects to submit sketch plans of such building to the Committee on March 23, 1908 at 2 o'clock P.M. at the Court House in the City of Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

  • March 1908 - Plans from Christ Tegen, of Manitowoc, selected
  • August 1908 - Old courthouse moved to site of present-day St. Mark's Church (approximately)
  • November 10, 1908 - Corner stone placed: "among the items in the copper box were several pieces of money, copies of all the newspapers printed in Oneida county, names of the county officers and members of the county board, names of the members of the building committee, names of the members of the Rhinelander Masonic lodge, a copy of all the county board proceedings containing everything relating to the building of the new court house, and a copy of the program of the Rhinelander Women's Club."   • 1909 - Work on the dome continues but placing of glass is delayed until 1910 due to trouble filling orders for tiling and iron.
  • 1911 - Use of the courthouse building was not reported until summer of 1911.

Brief outline of City Hall beginnings:

  • May 1907 - Property for city hall purchased and two houses moved.
  • July 1907 - Committee selects plans from Architect Henry Wildhagen.
  • September 1907 - City Council agrees on plans from Wildhagen, foundation started.
  • May 1908 - Contract for building given to local builder, Frank Bibby and construction started.
