The Oneida County Courthouse which was constructed between the years of 1908-1911. Designed as a neo-classical building in gray limestone by architect Christ H. Tegen of Manitowoc, Wisconsin for a cost of around $110,000, the exterior features a rusticated ground floor, two-story Ionic columns, classical moldings and an octagonal, translucent dome of green Tiffany glass.
The interior has a central light well, beneath the dome, with classical columns around the light well changing at each floor, from Doric, to Ionic, to Corinthian. The dome’s spandrel panels are enriched with mosaics, featuring eagles, and shields with stars and stripes. There are three murals in the building. Two were done by F. Biberstein in 1919, and show early scenes from Rhinelander’s history. The third is an illustration of the mythical Hodag, symbol of Rhinelander.*
